Happy New Year! We have hit the ground running after our break and have some fun things on the horizon for our Music Students. After such a successful Winter Concert, Students are pressing on with their own personal goals, as well as our class goals for the Spring semester to improve our musicianship together. Top of everyone’s list is how to better prepare for rehearsal (class) time with regular, focused practice. Ask your Student what this means!

In January, we re-established our routines first by seeing the return of our section coaches, who help address more specific concerns to each instrument type. Students are very excited to have them back after the break! Additionally, the String Orchestra, Symphonic and Concert Bands have begun the work to complete their semester-long Folk Tune Research Project. In it, they will learn many musical skills like composition (music writing) and transposition! They will be able to take advantage of SmartMusic to complete the assignment. Mr. White will use ParentSquare & Teams to keep parents and students up to date on the many deadlines to keep students on-task.

February will be a busy month our program! First, this year’s Ventura County Honor Band Concert on Feb. 5th features some of the best middle school and high school musicians from across the county. This year, the Middle School group will be conducted by the highly esteemed former Director of Bands at Valley View MS, Mr. Mitch Schuster! One of our own percussionists, Jaylin Faulkner, made the cut and will be performing with them this year. Congratulations! This would be great for the Live Performance Review so put it on your calendar! Ticket information can be found at www.vchb.org. Soon after, Symphonic and Concert Bands, and Strings have a planned CSUN Campus Tour and rehearsal/clinic! They will get to engage with Music students while on their campus. It’s a great opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business! They will also engage with 5th graders to help recruit for next year’s class with a “tour” and performing for assemblies at the elementary schools.

Finally in March, be sure to mark your calendars for the annual FMS VAPA Variety Night on Mar. 8th that features Solo and Ensemble  from our Students, as well as other departments’ art in an intimate “coffee shop” atmosphere. And don’t forget the SCSBOA Festival performances on Mar. 10th for our Symphonic Band and String Orchestra!
Little of this happens without your support which is spearheaded by the FMS Music Boosters – parents that have volunteered their time to raise funds so our students can experience more of what music has to offer them. Boosters can always use donations to offset costs (check our website for online donations) and be on the lookout for information on fundraisers and other ways to support our music program. Our Boosters continue planning the rest of the year in our regular meetings but could use your input! If you would like to participate, please contact Mr. White.

SYMPHONIC BAND / STRINGS / CONCERT BAND
Try to keep up with the many permission slips heading home and stay connected on ParentSquare. We have a lot going on and we don’t want a single student to miss out! They are also preparing to perform at Festival in March. Lots to work on!

STRINGS / BEGINNING BAND / PERCUSSION
We are working on our Solo and Ensemble skills like Airflow for Winds, Bow technique for Strings, and Stick technique for Percussion have all been a big part of our warm-ups to improve Tone Quality and Intonation! Ask your student how to do these skills!
